FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

The OC Parrot Nanny is happy to speak with you anytime about the needs of your feathered companion. Please feel free to give us a call or send us a message if your question has not been answered below.
What are the daily rates for excellent, customized care?

Our daily rates range from $15 to $25. Please click here for details.

How do I secure a reservation for my bird?

These items are required in order to secure your reservation:

1) Completed registration form.

2) Documentation from your vet that your bird is fit for boarding. Your vet will be happy to fax or email your bird's  records or a note written on their letterhead to us. This information can be found on our registration form.

How should I prepare for my bird's first visit?

If you will be renting one of our cages, please bring the following:

- At least 2-3 clean, familiar perches that can be easily attached to any cage. Great examples are flexible rope perches or branch perches that attach to one side of the rental cage.

- Favorite, familiar toys that can be hung from the top or side of the cage.

- A familiar "step-up" perch in case it is needed (particularly for larger or sometimes nippy birdies).

- Clean, familiar cage cover and/or nightlight (if you use these at home).

- Favorite foods and treats for us to serve. Please write your bird's name on the packages or containers. (We provide the bowls for all of our rental cages.)

If you are bringing your own clean cage, please bring these additional items:

- Familiar bowls for food and water. An extra set is great if you have them. Please write your bird's name on the bottom (underneath) with a Sharpie.

What are the health check-up requirements for boarding with the OC Parrot Nanny?

Because birds are flock animals, they tend to hide their illnesses until they are on death's door. That is why having regular check-ups with an avian vet is so very important. If you haven't done so already, please establish a relationship with a good avian vet as soon as possible. That way, if you need them for an emergency, you will be able to be seen as fast as possible. Avian medicine is by nature emergency medicine.

We request that you get a note from your vet stating that he or she is comfortable recommending your bird for boarding. Most vets will want to do an exam and get your bird's history. Based upon this information, they may recommend additional tests. Your vet can email or fax the documentation directly to us, or you can send it in.

Since all of our clients get their birdie check-ups on a regular basis (every one to two years depending upon exposures, exam results, etc.), you can feel confident that your bird with be in the safest place possible.

How do I find an avian vet?

The health needs of birds are distinct from other animals. You can find a list of avian vets (veterinarians who see birds in their practice) throughout California on this page of the Association of Avian Veterinarians: AAV.org

A board certified avian vet has specific expertise in the care and treatment of birds and will have these additional initials after their name: ABVP. The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners also provides an up-to-date list of board certified avian vets in California.
